Known as "the painterly print", monotypes are created by painting a metal plate with ink and then using a subtractive drawing process. The plate is then rolled through the printing press which lifts the ink and creates a unique, one-of-a-kind print. Since each imprint is a one-off that cannot be duplicated, the print run is marked "1 of 1".
